What to Do When Your Timing Is Not God’s Timing

You know that moment when you show up excited because you have already decided when your next move will happen? You prayed, prepared, and told yourself, “By this date, the opportunity will come.” Then the date arrives, nothing changes, and you look around wondering, God, what is going on?

You can point to signs of progress. You have led important engagements, joined calls with executives, heard people affirm your growth, and been reminded that there is more for you to accomplish. Yet the door you expected to open is still closed. You may even wonder, How can I heal and grow in the same environment that tried to break me, around people who mocked me, overlooked me, or minimized my work? Surely, God, this is not where You want me to stay.

That in-between place is hard. It is the space between what you prayed for and what you can see, between the promise in your heart and the reality in front of you. It can make you question whether you heard God correctly or whether you should stop hoping altogether.

Do Not Confuse a Delay with God’s Absence

When the answer does not come by your deadline, it can feel like God has forgotten you. But a delayed answer is not proof that He is absent. Psalm 27:14 connects waiting with courage and renewed strength, while Habakkuk 2:3 reminds us that the vision has an appointed time. Waiting is not always inactivity; sometimes it is where God strengthens your faith, clarifies your motives, and prepares you for what you have been asking Him to provide.

So what do you do? Do you give up on God because He did not move by the date you circled? Do you settle for what is familiar because waiting has become uncomfortable? Or do you keep activating your faith and believe that God can still do something bigger, wiser, and better than you imagined?

Waiting on God Does Not Mean Standing Still

I am encouraging myself as I encourage you: do not give up on God. I have seen Him work in my life before, and by faith I believe there is still better ahead. While you wait, keep taking faithful action. Connect with people. Steward the relationships God has already given you. Get out, explore what else is available, join conversations with people doing what you hope to do, and receive wisdom from mentors and coaches.

One setback does not erase your progress. One closed door does not cancel your calling. Do not let disappointment stop you in your tracks or persuade you to accept a burden God may be asking you to release.

Do Not Measure Your Season Against Someone Else’s Harvest

You may see other people celebrating, advancing, and making life look easy. It is tempting to compare their visible harvest with your hidden work. But God sees the soil you have cultivated, watered, and sown into. He was present for every application, phone call, email, direct message, and meeting. He sees you showing up when part of you wants to cry, scream, and ask, “But when will it be my turn?”

Your story is not behind. It is unfolding on a timeline you cannot fully see. And when the right door opens, it may not only be what you wanted; it may be what you needed. God’s timing can protect you from opportunities you are not meant to carry and prepare you for those you are.
